Pacific Rim was Awesome

It's no secret that I love movies and often go to the cinema with my sister or mom. I went recently to see Pacific Rim with my sister, and the both of us are Neon Genesis Evangelion fans so we were understandably excited. I loved it so much I went to see it again with my mom! It had its flaws but was a great bit of monster vs. robot fun.

As a result I decided I'd draw up a bit of Pacific Rim artwork (I'm also compiling a rocking playlist to go with it!) and this is the result!

I want to live in a Container House one day

Recently I was researching about modified shipping containers turned into studios and homes as a means of cheaper, recyclable living space.

As it happens I just completed a commission for something very similar - Accessory Dwelling Units! These are mini houses built on property or converted garages. They're pretty popular in Portland US at the moment.

Much thanks to my friend Jack for putting my name forward for the job! It's a speculative image, but here's hoping it'll lead to more work. If not - one for the portfolio!

I also did a few black and white drawings of tea leaves for another commission which sadly fell through.

And to top it all off, I've almost finished doing up the spare room into a study/studio room. I'm in shared housing so I wanted to make sure the room is usable by others as well! Once it's finished I'll post up some pictures here. All I can say is...thank you, IKEA!

More updates soon!

Drawing Dogs

New Designers was fantastic, it was great to see so many incredibly talented people! There's been some interest in my work as a result, so it's been worth the stress of it all.

In the meantime (while looking for work) I've been talking with my wonderful mother about a story idea she's had - which I love - but involves drawing dogs...which are something I'm not used to drawing, so I've been experimenting with my style, seeing how it looks. Here's some initial sketches for you!

A Cockapoo. Essentially a mass of black curls...couldn't have picked a harder breed to start with!
A German Shepherd. One of my favourite breeds! This one is only a youngster!

Slightly more cartoony style to get across expressions better.

I'll try and keep updating more often, and will be doing an overhaul on my website sometime soon. Don't forget there's also my sketchbook link in the meantime!

Officially graduated, but still working!

My year finally got our results and I have officially graduated - now into the wide world of work. I've been super busy with moving and networking, but here's a few things I've been doing in the meantime.

Image inspired by Maduk's song, 'Ghost Assassin'

Sketching at the hostel (in colour).
I'm currently in London for the New Designer's show this year, so if you see me around - I'll be wearing my badge hat - come up and say hi!

The End is Nigh!

Here's a book cover I've been working on this week, for the YA book 'The Doomspell' by Cliff McNish, as well as some of my development thumbnails.

Last week in the studio before final ever hand in at the end of the month! Time flies!

Spectrum Character Design

Hey all! Here are the updated character designs for the three main player characters from Spectrum (a mobile game concept I'm working on). You may have seen the initial designs on my sketchblog, but these are the relatively final images:

Scarlett, the close-range fighter type

Klein, the defensive builder type

Blaine, the long-range fighter type

And a bonus experimental gif of Scarlett!

My business cards are here as well and we're all getting ready to head off to London next week so might be too busy to update for a little while, but will still be putting up some rougher work on my sketchblog. I'm also going to be doing a giveaway once I've completed 50 pokemon warmups, so keep an eye out!

Business Cards!

It's almost time for our trip to London to meet agents and companies, and the New Designers show is also coming up fast, so most of the class has been working on getting some business cards made up - including yours truly!
Mine are supposed to be varied in style but still cohesive as a representation of what I do and how I draw or visualise. Here are the final designs to be sent off tomorrow:

And on the back of all of them will be this:

Some of my classmates reckon the back image is a bit intimidating, but I'm only smiling! I don't really like drawing myself but I am proud of my hat. Also redesigned my website if you haven't seen it yet!

Fun times!

You know that feeling where you want to draw, but don't know what? And how you work on something for hours but end up disliking it...

Business card design number one!

Practice, practice

Hey guys, I've been busy with uni work and with Victoriana so for now have a practice picture of Link! I'm trying to get used to sketching straight into Manga Studio with my tablet and using its tone settings ...Link is always a great source of inspiration.  View fullsize for the full impact!

And a quick kinda-self portrait drawn straight into photoshop because I haven't done much colour work recently:
And a quick note to say that I was featured on the Business Boom Collective HERE.

Xmas Update

Hey guys, I've been working on Victoriana most of the holiday so far, but have been posting a few doodles and bits up on my sketchblog. It's going to be a busy Christmas but we'll see how much work I get done.
Here's a coloured sketch to prove I'm still alive!

More Character Design

A continuation of the last post, here's some more character design stuff for my neo-noir movie. Inked by hand and then quick slap of colour on photoshop.
Our heroine (whose name i still haven't decided on - maybe Claire?) in some cool threads. She looks a bit moody, but then an old friend has just turned up dead on her doorstop so it might be excusable.

Anna is currently one of my favourites, which is a shame, since she spends most of the movie dead and only really appears in flashbacks. Here's the proof:

Finally, Liam, who gave me so much trouble and he's still being developed. Such a hard character to pin down! Slowly getting there.
Still a few more central characters to design, then on to storyboarding! I'm looking forward to it!

Character Design Process

Been working on some character design this week; these show you the process. This heroine is a young reporter whose friend has just shown up dead on her doorstop...

Eye of the Tiger

Illustrations for a narrative based on the song 'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor.
In Japan they have these amazing embroidered satin baseball jackets that look very gangsta, which was the inspiration for this. I've also been experimenting with composition and dramatic effect. Feedback on these is appreciated!

Character Design

Been ill recently, so decided to redesign an old character of mine to make myself feel better. The new and improved Guardian!

Have You Tried...Vegetables!

Speculative Illustrations for a series of vegetable-based recipe cards

I've recently started trying to eat healthier, do a little more exercise and so on, which is the inspiration for this.
